How to Celebrate Earth Day Every Day!

Did Earth Day pass you by yesterday?   It was here before I knew it and I was without a plan.  There was no where to plant a tree so I just decided that I was going to pay more attention to the things that I normally do to help the environment.   Here are a few things that you can do every day to limit your waste:

1. Recycle:  I have to admit that I was throwing things in the trash without thinking about it. I would remember the big things but the little things are what adds up. Those little things included toilet paper tubes, and old church bulletins!  After recycling everything possible yesterday, it was amazing how little trash we consumed!

You can join Recyclebank to learn more about recycling plus earn points towards great rewards. Bonus for you and the earth: Recycling saves renewables from going to the dump and you get to save money on trash bags!

2. Compost:  If you do any type of gardening, it's beneficial to start making your own compost. My vase of tulips were wilted and I made sure that they went into the compost bin.  You cannot compost everything so here is a great list to get you started Bonus for you and the earth: Composting saves all that waste from going to the landfill and can help you have a great garden this year!

3. Use Your Leftovers: Make too much for dinner?  Save it in the refrigerator and serve it tomorrow with different sides, in a different recipe, or take it to lunch.  The ham we had for Easter made great ham and cheese omelets and ham salad sandwichesBonus for you and the earth: Using leftovers saves you and your household energy and money on groceries!

4.  Hang your Laundry to Dry:  Since I live in Michigan, this is a seasonal thing for me but Spring has sprung and I'm hanging clothes outside. You could also hang your clothes to dry inside during the winter months.  Bonus for you and the earth: Saves pollution from the dryer and it saves energy costs as well.  The smell of fresh air on the clothes is an added bonus!

5.  Turn off the Lights:  Every time I leave a room, I turn off the lights. Simple as that!  Bonus for you and the earth:   Less energy is used and a lower energy bill for you next month!

My pledge is to be more diligent about the things that I normally do every day in order to help the earth.  What do you do to save energy or waste?
